About
Julie Abouchar was an incredible friend, collaborator, lawyer and leader. We are honoured to have worked alongside her during her time at MT+Co.
While at MT+Co., Julie led our Toronto office. She was a passionate advocate who brought humanity, caring, and dedication to everything she did, offering mentorship and guidance to all who had the pleasure of working alongside her.
She was endlessly dedicated to her family, always sharing loving stories about her husband, Bill, her son, Joshua, and her close-knit extended family.
Julie was curious and adventurous, and led every day with a genuine interest in people. She was a lifelong sailor and often shared stories of her time at Camp Newfound in Harrison, Maine, USA, first as a camper, as a counselor, camp parent, and, most recently, as a member of the board of trustees.
Julie’s love of learning was constant, as she earned five degrees – two undergraduate degrees and three law degrees – including Earth Sciences and Environmental Law. Her Master’s work has been cited by the Supreme Court of Canada. Julie trained as an environmental lawyer, serving as counsel to the Walkerton Inquiry, with her legal career gravitating towards Indigenous issues. She worked tirelessly to pursue the interests of her clients and, in true Julie fashion, became friends with them all.
Julie never missed an opportunity for adventures with Bill, Joshua, and her extended family. They hiked volcanoes in Iceland, took cooking classes in Italy, and flew to Australia to see family. Julie had a genuine interest in people, so whether she was driving the Dempster Highway, exploring the jungles of Costa Rica, or skating Le Domaine Enchanteur, she always came back with stories to tell and an appreciation for the people she met.
Julie epitomized leading with love in all aspects of her life and never failed to create special moments for her son, Josh, and her nieces, Sally and Caroline. Be it a Christmas scavenger hunt, a trip to the zoo, or an evening at the video store followed by frozen yogurt, Julie never failed to bring love and fun into the lives of her loved ones.
Following in the footsteps of her mum, Julie had a keen interest in building projects, demonstrating creative talent and clear vision. She oversaw several house renovations and, recently, a rebuild of their Presqu’ile cottage. The door was always open, and everyone was welcome at her table – for tea, for a game of Wizard, or for dinner and a piece of strawberry rhubarb pie.
Julie made the world a brighter place, and she will be forever loved and missed.
